New research suggests that individuals who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who stop traditional lifestyle programs.
Findings released in a leading health publication points out that while obese individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Users using such drugs must be informed of the risk of quick weight regain when the therapy concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery suggests a reversion to original mass within about one and a half years.
Comparing Therapies
The analysis, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
Scientists point out that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise usually experience a more gradual creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Understanding the Fast Regain
Experts believe the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated regain.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Discontinuation of this medication means appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Issue?
The NHS advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals say that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment is often ongoing.
This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "underscore the chronic nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Testimonies
Individuals who have come off the jabs report a intense resurgence of appetite.
"I experienced a switch activating and you become ravenous," described an individual.
This difficulty is compounded if patients have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Significant Use
Survey data indicate that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand being substantial.
- Use is greater among women compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, experts caution that while these medications are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits relies on combined lifestyle support.
